The Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN is the long-awaited zoom lens from this manufacturer. I've wanted to test this lens since the moment they announced it. I managed to do it less than two months after it appeared on the market.

Big thanks to @sigmafotopolska for delivering this lens for testing!

Build

Let's start with the build specification and quality this time. As for the optical structure of the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8, it consists of 20 elements arranged in 15 groups. They include 6 FLD lenses, 2 SLD lenses, and 3 aspherical lenses. I tested the lens with the Sony A7RV camera. I got a really good balance.

The weight of the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN lens is only 1.345g, which makes it a quite light product. The filter size is 77mm so buying filters will not empty our wallet.

This Sigma lens features very solid materials. You can use it in pretty much any condition. The lens features protection against all types of unwanted weather conditions like dust and splashes. Personally, I took photos in quite heavy rain and did not notice any problems. Both during and after the walk.

Image quality

The photo quality is truly Sigma classic. Also, the vividness of the image generated by this lens is as good and intriguing as the Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN. And that's a good thing, of course. The photos are really sharp at a wide-open aperture - F2.8.

In the case of the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8, we deal with quite good correction of aberrations - there are few of them. As for the vignette, there is not much of it, so my impression is that the glass has been corrected correctly. Depending on your needs, the image may not require post-production.

When it comes to AF, the lens worked without any problems. Sometimes, but very rarely, it got lost in darker locations. What impressed me the most was the speed. AF is quick and precise both in center and spot mode.

Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 conclusion

A Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 was definitely missing from Sigma. Finally, the gap was filled and it met my all expectations. The weight could be reduced a bit more, but less than 1.400g is still a good result. Price-wise, $1,499 is an acceptable amount considering that the competition costs several hundred dollars more.

Take your time and watch my two videos, which will show you more interesting photos straight from the streets of Warsaw. All taken with this lens.
